On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced a sweeping 50 percent tariff on Brazilian imports in a post on Truth Social.

In his tariff letter, the president cited his ongoing support for Brazil's former right-wing leader Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently on trial before the country's Supreme Federal Court, facing charges related to an alleged coup attempt following his 2022 electoral defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In recent days, Trump has publicly defended Bolsonaro on Truth Social, labeling the trial a "witch hunt" and asserting that Bolsonaro is "not guilty of anything."

The president wrote in his tariff letter, "This trial should not be taking place. It is a Witch Hunt that should end IMMEDIATELY!"
