At the end of January, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of nearly 20,000 Trek and Electra e-bikes. The affected bikes are the Trek FX+ 1 and the Electra Townie Go!.

The issue? Apparently, the rear wheel bolts are breaking when torqued, allowing the wheel to separate from the bike. This certainly comes as a blow to Trek, as the FX+ 1 lineup was the first throttle-equipped e-bike the brand offered.

It is unclear from the report if “torque” refers to the actual tightening of the bolt or the force from riding the e-bike. Guesses have us pointing to the former, as the report also indicates that no injuries have been reported in connection with this issue.

The Trek-branded bikes affected are model year 2026:

  • FX+ 1 Midstep
  • FX+ 1S Midstep
  • FX+ 1 Stepover
  • FX+ 1S Stepover

The Electra-branded bikes recalled are model year 2026:

  • Townie Go! Step Thru
  • Townie Go! S Step Thru

CPSC indicates that these bikes were sold before October 28, 2025. The bolts in question are black in color and connect the rear hub motor to the bike. Hyena, the company that makes the rear hub motor used in these bikes, also manufactured the bolts.

If this sounds like you, the CPSC recommends you stop riding immediately and contact a Trek dealer. The repair is free, and Trek even provides participants with a $10 in-store credit good for any Trek, Electra, or Bontrager products.

For reference, the recall number is: 26-220. See the full report at cpsc.gov.
