Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDENVER (KDVR) — The woman who hit and killed a 17-year-old cyclist, Magnus White, in 2023 will be sentenced on Friday morning.
Yeva Smilianska, 24, was found guilty of vehicular homicide and reckless driving in April after she hit and killed White, who was biking on the paved shoulder of Highway 119 in Boulder on July 29, 2023. White was training for the U.S. Cycling National Team in the mountain biking world championships when he was hit and ejected from his bike. He was taken to the hospital and died later that night.
Now, her sentencing begins at 10 a.m.
This sentencing comes after Smilianska pleaded not guilty to the charge in May of 2024.
Smilianska originally told investigators that her car malfunctioned, but investigators said they did not find mechanical issues with the vehicle and believed she likely fell asleep behind the wheel.
During the trial, investigators said she stayed up until 6 a.m. before driving home and texted her friend that she was "falling asleep." Witnesses then recounted that she swerved a few times before hitting White. Meanwhile, the defense agreed that extreme exhaustion led up to the crash, but argued that this was a case of careless driving.
Smilianska was found guilty of vehicular homicide and reckless driving instead of a lesser charge of careless driving causing death.
