The saying that hard work done quietly eventually speaks for itself finds a fitting example in the life of Ramdev Singh Meel from Kanwarpura village in Rajasthan’s Sikar district. His remarkable journey recently received national attention when Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned him during the 131st episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat‘, describing his life as an inspiring story of resilience, from battling a life-threatening illness to proudly representing the nation on the global stage. PM Modi also used the example to promote awareness about organ donation across the country.
Ramdev Singh Meel is currently employed as a technician with the electricity department in the Salasar area. In 2012, both his kidneys failed, pushing him into a critical condition. At a time when his life hung in the balance, his mother donated one of her kidneys, giving him a second chance at life. After nearly a year of treatment and recovery, he gradually returned to normalcy and revived his long-standing interest in sports.
He went on to participate twice in the National Transplant Games held in Mumbai. In his first appearance, he secured multiple medals, including gold and silver, demonstrating his athletic potential. During his second participation, he won two silver medals, further strengthening his record in transplant sports.
His determination and discipline eventually earned him a place on the international stage. In 2025, Ramdev Singh represented India at the World Transplant Games in Dresden, Germany, where he won a gold medal in javelin throw, a silver medal in long jump, and bronze medals in ball throw and discus throw, bringing pride to both the country and Rajasthan.
Ramdev Singh has called for greater recognition and institutional support for transplant athletes, emphasising the need for financial assistance and encouragement from both the government and society. He continues to train with the aim of inspiring others, demonstrating that organ transplant recipients can overcome challenges and achieve excellence.
