The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday (February 24, 2026) agreed to examine a plea seeking a direction to the State Governments permitting the installation and operation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, especially within group housing societies, as an effective anti-pollution measure.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant issued notice on a petition filed by Rachit Katyal, a resident of Noida represented by advocate Sriram Parakkat, for direction to the States to implement the Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure 2024.

The petition said the installation of electric vehicle chargers would enable residents to have “safe and sufficient infrastructure for charging their e-vehicles in the society at their own cost”. Mr. Katyal submitted that he had already approached the Centre, but to no avail.

“Despite more than a year, there has been no legislative intervention to address the issue of effective implementation Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure, 2024, which is a facet of Articles 14, 15, 16 and 21 of the Constitution of India,” the petition said.

The petitioner referred to his own inability to charge his vehicle in his group housing society despite buying an e-vehicle in compliance with the increasing need for sustainable and eco-friendly transportation.
