Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDENVER (KDVR) — At Community Food Share, a branch of Feeding America, just northwest of Denver, helping families put food on the table is just part of what they do.
“This is only one small part of the work we do here. We have 46 partner agencies that we provide some of the food that they distribute across Boulder and Broomfield counties,” said Director of Philanthropy at Community Food Share Kaleigh Wagner.
But the uncertainty of the future stresses what their system will look like. Those at Community Food Share say Coloradans could be paying the price if SNAP is cut.
“We will be shouldering more of the administrative costs, that could be up to an additional $94 million. So it will have an incredible impact on our economic system here of more than $200 million,” Wagner said.
The executive director for Feeding America, Mandy Nuku, says they help provide food for 1.2 million Coloradans. And if they lose the funding, this bill could cause tens of thousands of Coloradans to lose their SNAP benefits.
“Just over 80,000 Coloradans could lose some amount of SNAP benefits, and about 36,000 could be dropped from SNAP altogether,” Nuku said.
While this bill continues to move forward, as it stands today, those at Feeding America say the path of the future is going to be difficult to navigate.
“We will continue to leverage our strength with the community, with donors, with retail partners. But the reality is we will not be able to meet the need that is coming,” Nuku said.
Lawmakers in the House, like Republican Jeff Hurd, say they want to see more work put into the bill.
"The Big Beautiful Bill sent back to the House from the Senate is going to require significant changes in order to pass," Hurd said Tuesday. "I look forward to working with leadership and my colleagues to pass a bill consistent with the promises we made on the campaign trail.”
