DENVER (KDVR) — Two Colorado hospitals said Wednesday that the future of their facilities and services hangs in the balance of the 'Big Beautiful Bill' currently under discussion in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The hospitals say that their services are essential to their communities and if this bill becomes law, they could be forced to make some tough decisions.

Colorado leaders urge Trump to restore $71M in education funding

"I'm confident we'll be able to figure something out but I'm also equally concerned that we will have to limit some services and make some really hard decisions,” CEO of Lincoln Community Hospital Kevin Stansbury said.

Stansbury said they are used to doing more with less, but the cuts in Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill could cost rural hospitals dearly.

Lincoln Community is the only hospital between Denver and Burlington, a span of over 150 miles. Stansbury says that is why they are essential to care for people traveling along Interstate 70.

“But we're an essential part of the fabric of the trauma system for the state. We take care of a lot of folks that get hurt out in rural areas, and I'm not sure that's appreciated enough,” Stansbury said.

Some lawmakers like Diana DeGette say Colorado hospitals could lose up to $10 billion in funding.

“Many of the rural hospitals, particularly in Western and Northern Colorado, will have to go out of business," DeGette said. "This will not only hurt people who get Medicaid. It will hurt the entire community.”

CEO of Southwest Health System in Cortez, Joe Theine, echoes that sentiment.

“It's not just the Medicaid recipient, it's you know, is there going to be sustainable funding for the services we provide and what happens if a service isn't available? And I also think about what happens if, you know, rural hospitals closed completely,” Thiene said.
