DENVER (KDVR) — As Congress weighs President Donald Trump's reconciliation bill, funding for many organizations is in flux.

If passed, this budget bill could cut Medicaid and eliminate federal funding for Planned Parenthood. Leaders say hundreds of Planned Parenthood health centers could close across the country.

Even though the bill does not mention Planned Parenthood specifically, it would not allow clinics like this to participate in the Medicaid program. Medicaid is the nation's largest health insurer for low-income communities.

GOP leader sets Saturday vote on Trump ‘big, beautiful bill’ despite Republican pushback

“That puts Planned Parenthood at risk of closing 200 health centers across 24 states, 200 out of 600 health centers. So it would be very devastating for communities all across this country, even more importantly, that 200 those 200 health centers exist largely in states that have abortion access. So in some ways, we see this as a backdoor abortion ban,” said Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

The use of taxpayer dollars to subsidize abortion providers is morally repugnant. Planned Parenthood doesn’t deserve a single penny. Instead, they should be held accountable for the millions of innocent lives lost. Focus on the Family is calling on all our pro-life friends to urge Congress to pass a reconciliation bill that defunds Planned Parenthood and all abortion providers. Women deserve compassionate, empowering, and life-affirming health care — not abortion.

Planned Parenthood said the majority of their health centers are in rural or medically underserved areas. That means patients could have to travel long distances to get the services they need, like cervical and breast cancer screenings, birth control, sti testing and treatment, and more.

Half of their patients depend on Medicaid for their health insurance.

“Colorado has been an oasis during this public health crisis as it relates to abortion, since the Dobbs decision, and so it's quite shocking. I would say that Representative Gabe Evans actually voted in favor of this bill,” said Johnson. “We know Coloradans have stood formally, firmly in support of abortion access. Colorado has been there. They have opened up their doors, allowing people to come in and be served and get the time sensitive, high quality care they need at Planned Parenthood, it's all across the state. So the idea that rep Gabe Evans would see fit to vote for a defunding bill that could limit access to Coloradans as well as people who are coming in across the south and the Midwest to get that care really is unconscionable.”

Republicans are working to save Medicaid by removing fraud and waste so that the system prioritizes dollars for those who need it most: seniors, single mothers, kids, and people with disabilities. That’s exactly what Congressman Evans is fighting to do.
