Global purchases of imported fertilizers cost a total US$112.9 billion in 2025.

The overall cost of fertilizers imported in 2025 increased by an average 15.1% paid by all importing countries from 5 years earlier in 2021 when fertilizers purchases were valued at $98.1 billion.

Year over year, international purchases of fertilizers accelerated by 17.7% compared to $96 billion starting in 2024.

Key Geographic Insights for Exported Fertilizers

The 5 biggest importers of fertilizers in 2025 were Brazil, India, United States of America, mainland China and Australia. That cohort of major buyers generated over two-fifths (41.6%) of total international spending on fertilizers imported in 2025.

From a continental perspective, Asian countries spent the most on imported fertilizers during 2025 with purchases costing $38.6 billion or 34.2% of the global total. In second place were importers based in Europe at 22%. Another 20.9% of globally imported fertilizers was delivered to Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

Another 12.4% was sent to importers in North America.

Smaller percentages were sold to buyers in Africa (6.8%), then Oceania (3.6%) led by Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

Sales by Type of Imported Fertilizers

As for different categories of imported fertilizers, three-quarters (75.2%) were nitrogen-based products.

Potassic fertilizers represent 19.4% compared to phosphatic fertilizers at 4%. Excluding those mineral or chemical fertilizer subcategories, the other fertilizer type is animal or vegetable fertilizers which accounted for the remaining 1.3%.

For research purposes, the high-level Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for fertilizers is 31.

Below are the 15 countries that spent the most on imported fertilizers during 2025.

  1. Brazil: US$15.5 billion (13.7% of total fertilizers imported)
  2. India: $14.3 billion (12.6%)
  3. United States: $9 billion (8%)
  4. mainland China: $4.9 billion (4.3%)
  5. Australia: $3.3 billion (2.9%)
  6. France: $3.24 billion (2.9%)
  7. Thailand: $2.9 billion (2.6%)
  8. Canada: $2.7 billion (2.4%)
  9. Indonesia: $2.5 billion (2.2%)
  10. Mexico: $2.27 billion (2%)
  11. Bangladesh: $2.19 billion (1.9%)
  12. Poland: $2.15 billion (1.9%)
  13. Germany: $2.06 billion (1.8%)
  14. Argentina: $2.06 billion (1.8%)
  15. Türkiye: $2 billion (1.8%)

By value, the listed 15 countries purchased 62.9% of all fertilizers imported in 2025.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing markets for fertilizers from 2024 to 2025 were: India (up 82.5%), Argentina (up 33.5%), Bangladesh (up 31.7%) and Germany (up 31.5%).

Those countries that posted year-over-year declines in their imported fertilizers purchases were Mexico (down -6.9%) and the United States of America (down -4%).

The strongest percentage increases in their purchases of imported fertilizers from 2024 to 2025 belong to buyers in Ethiopia (up 559%), Burkina Faso (up 144.5%), United Arab Emirates (up 126.9%), Burundi (up 116.7%) and India (up 82.5%).

Brazil’s global purchases of imported fertilizers totaled US$15.5 billion in 2025. Below are the top 15 suppliers from which Brazil imported the highest dollar value worth of fertilizers during 2025. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country from 2024 to 2025.

  2. mainland China: $2.9 billion (up 51.3%)

Countries that experienced year-over-year declines in the value of their fertilizers supplied to Brazilian importers included: Venezuela (down -7.3%), Oman (down -5.2%) and Morocco (down -0.4%).

Overall, the value of Brazil’s imported fertilizers rose by an average 14.1% from all supplying countries since 2024 when fertilizers purchased cost $13.6 billion.

India’s global purchases of imported fertilizers totaled US$14.3 billion in 2025. Below are the top 15 suppliers from which India imported the highest dollar value worth of fertilizers during 2025. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country from 2024 to 2025.

Overall, the value of India’s imported fertilizers spiked by an average 82.5% from all supplying countries since 2024 when fertilizers purchased cost $7.8 billion.

Fertilizers Imports into America

America’s global purchases of imported fertilizers totaled US$9 billion in 2025. Below are the top suppliers from which the United States of America imported the highest dollar value worth of fertilizers during 2025. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country from 2024 to 2025.

  1. Canada: US$3.8 billion (down -2.9% from 2024)
  2. Russia: $1.8 billion (up 37.9%)
  3. Saudi Arabia: $458.6 million (down -42.5%)
  4. Qatar: $450.7 million (up 24.5%)
  5. Israel: $284.7 million (down -16.1%)
  6. Mexico: $238.2 million (down -4.1%)

Overall, the value of America’s imported fertilizers fell by an average -4% from all supplying countries since 2024 when fertilizers purchased cost $9.4 billion.

Mainland China’s global purchases of imported fertilizers totaled US$4.9 billion in 2025. Below are the top 15 suppliers from which China imported the highest dollar value worth of fertilizers during 2025. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country from 2024 to 2025.

  1. Russia: US$1.6 billion (up 13.1% from 2024)
  2. Belarus: $747.2 million (down -11.5%)

Overall, the value of China’s imported fertilizers grew by an average 5.7% from all supplying countries since 2024 when fertilizers purchased cost $4.6 billion.
