DENVER (KDVR) -- Many Colorado cities face rising environmental issues: extreme weather like wildfires and snowstorms, regular air quality concerns, and health risks among marginalized communities.

One Colorado city's strategic plan to combat some of these environmental issues for its residents is being recognized nationally. Englewood, one of Denver's neighbors to the south, is a finalist for the National Civic League's "All-America City Award," which honors cities across the U.S. for excellence in local innovation, civic engagement and cross-sector collaboration.

"This prestigious award highlights the remarkable potential within communities to address critical issues and drive meaningful change when residents, businesses, and nonprofit and government leaders work in concert," according to the National Civic League's website.

The theme for 2025 is "Strengthening Environmental Sustainability through Inclusive Community Engagement," and Englewood is among 20 finalists from around the country that will present the story of their city's work on sustainability at the annual awards event later this month in Denver.

Here is what the National Civic League said about Englewood's work:

Recognizing these challenges, Englewood has made sustainability a central focus. Since 2020, the city has prioritized sustainability in its strategic plan, launched a dedicated sustainability program and commission, and hired a coordinator to lead initiatives. These efforts target climate impacts, energy efficiency, and waste diversion, especially to benefit the city’s most vulnerable populations. Englewood’s work demonstrates a commitment to inclusive progress, regional resilience, and environmental sustainability.

The city, in a Facebook post announcing its finalist status, said adding sustainability to its strategic plan has given it "a leadership role in sustainability by removing barriers for community initiatives," some of which include grants, turf replacement, garden-in-a-box rebates, an Arbor Day tree sale and compost and disposal programs.

Of the 20 finalists, ten will be selected as winners at the awards event, which takes place June 27-29 at the Grand Hyatt in Denver. If Englewood wins, the city will join 16 other Colorado cities that have won since 1954.
