Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDENVER (KDVR) -- Two teenage hikers were rescued Monday night in Park County with the help of a drone and K-9 after they became separated and ended up four miles away from each other.
Park County communications received a call at around 6 p.m. Monday from one of the hikers, who said he and his friend were hiking and got separated, according to the Park County Sheriff's Office. He also told dispatchers they had no food, no water, and were not dressed for the elements.
Temperatures that night dropped into the 40s in the area, with some strong wind gusts reported.
A large search team including the Park County Sheriff's Office, Park County Search and Rescue, a human tracker from the Fairplay Police Department, the Hartsel Fire Department’s drone team, members from the Lake George Fire Department, Southern Park County Fire Protection District, and Teller County Search and Rescue responded to the area, the sheriff's office said.
Several of the responders went to the area of County Road 77 and Forest Service Road 210 just outside Lake George, where they found the 17-year-olds' vehicle.
A Park County K-9 named Rip then picked up the hikers' scent from the vehicle and started tracking them. Just after 9 p.m., one of the hikers was found thanks to Rip and Hartsel Fire's drone team.
The second hiker was then found about four miles away from the other on a completely different trail. He was found dehydrated and suffering from exhaustion.
Both teens were safely reunited with their families and are expected to fully recover, according to the sheriff's office.
