Steph Curry believes it would be “a unique story in sports history” if he and LeBron James were to link-up for the Golden State Warriors next season.

James is an unrestricted free agent after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers and currently assessing his options with several teams eager to snap up the 41-year-old, who is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

And while acknowledging the Warriors probably aren’t the favourites in a race led by the Cleveland Cavaliers, James’ former team, Curry said he would relish the opportunity to reprise the camaraderie they enjoyed on the 2024 USA Olympics team coached by Steve Kerr.

He said: “Up until probably two, three years ago, that was like a pipe-dream question or even a thought.

“But that’s part of the allure. Him going into his 24th season, me going into my 18th, the battles we’ve had, that would be such a unique story in NBA history, in sports history. But a little premature right now to talk about it.”

LeBron holidays with Warriors star Green

The Warriors can certainly offer James an environment in which he would feel comfortable. He counts Curry as a friend while he is currently on holiday with Warriors star Draymond Green in Puerto Rico.

ESPN claims Curry and James have discussed the move via text message but the former was unwilling to put a percentage figure on the chances of the 22-time All-Star moving to the Bay Area.

“I don’t have a percentage,” Curry said. “It’s kind of up to him. I feel like any place he calls and says I want to play there, you move mountains to make it happen.

“The pitch is: Do you want to play good basketball and be around people that know how to play the game? Hopefully raise our floor and our competitiveness this year. There’s good golf in the Bay. We’re an organisation that’s been there. He knows that. That’s really self-explanatory. It’s a matter of where he sees himself fitting. At the end of the day, that’s up to him.”

Warriors in unique situation claims Curry

Golden State limped to a 37-45 record last season but have re-signed Kristaps Porzingis, Al Hereford and De’Anthony Melton.

Curry said: “It’s great to get KP back, great to get Melt back. We’re in a unique situation where Jimmy [Butler] is hurt, Moses [Moody] is hurt and they’re going to miss a good amount of the season. You have to try to hold the fort down until those guys get back because we do have an idea of what we could be with them.”
