Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayAURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — There is some concern and fear at an apartment complex in Aurora where a video released by police shows gang activity.
The new surveillance video shows a group of people standing at an apartment door near 6th and Potomac on June 9. A day later, Aurora police began a major investigation at the complex.
“I was surprised and scared when I saw all the officers here,” said one lady who wanted to remain anonymous.
The woman who spoke Spanish said she’s concerned but plans to continue living at the complex.
The new video is similar to a video taken at another complex in Aurora last August, which showed Venezuelan gang members. APD was criticized for how it handled that investigation.
But the department now has a new chief who is taking a different, more aggressive, transparent approach.
On Tuesday, Chief Todd Chamberlain gave extensive details about how the video surfaced and what APD did to investigate and make two arrests just days later.
Chamberlain said the investigation is still in its early stages and more arrests are expected.
“I am so happy to see how serious the Aurora Police Department is taking this and handling this situation working diligently to identify and arrest these guys. This behavior will not be tolerated in Aurora. As the police chief said in his press conference, Aurora has turned a corner, and I look forward to the continued investigation,” Aurora At Large Council Member Danielle Jurinsky said. Jurinsky has been vocal about her concerns about gang activity in the city.
But there are concerns being expressed by at least one migrant social justice organization.
“We’ve heard that (gang members are involved) too many times in the past. That gang members are present, then when it comes down to it, there are none. Throwing terms around like 'gang member' is often a thinly veiled way to criminalize being young and brown,” American Friends Service Committee Denver spokesperson Jordan Garcia said.
Still, APD says it will keep looking to make more arrests in the case. The department says it hopes to address issues at the complex before they grow worse.
