DENVER (KDVR) -- A skier in Boulder County fell about 1,000 feet and suffered serious injuries before being rescued and evacuated by helicopter on Saturday, according to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.

Boulder County responders first began receiving 911 calls around 10:30 a.m. Saturday of someone with serious injuries near Skywalker Couloir on South Arapahoe Peak, west of Nederland, according to a sheriff's office press release. A 29-year-old man was starting to ski down the Couloir when he fell, sliding about 1,000 feet down the snowfield before stopping.

Nederland Fire Protection District personnel were first to respond and entered through the Fourth of July Trailhead. A MedEvac helicopter also brought a volunteer from the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group to the skier.

The injured skier was then taken by helicopter to a hospital.

The sheriff's office said poor reception caused frequent 911 call drops and stressed the importance of carrying a Personal Locator Beacon when engaging in backcountry recreation.
