- Ski resorts
- Trail Ridge Road
- Train rides
- Horseback rides
- Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park
Here are just a few of the many fun ways to enjoy Colorful Colorado this summer.
Hike one these trails in the Colorado mountains
Colorado is known for its abundant hiking trails across the state, not just in the high country, but some of the best-known hikes and views can be seen across the mountains.
Another popular hiking spot frequently seen on TikTok is located just outside Idaho Springs down Interstate 70 from Denver. St. Mary's Glacier, not actually a glacier but a semi-permanent snowfield, is a year-round snowy spot for anyone missing the winter a little and takes just a moderate 1.5-mile hike to reach.
Some other popular places include Rocky Mountain National Park's Bear Lake Corridor near Estes Park, which requires a timed entry permit during the summer as well as the regular entrance pass. Or, for the more adventurous hikers, the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail runs through Colorado on its five-state path.
Enjoy the water on these Colorado lakes
Colorado may be known for the sweeping vistas of the mountains, but the high country also offers some incredible water activities.
Lakes such as Dillon Reservoir, Lake Granby and Twin Lakes have opportunities for kayaking and paddleboarding enthusiasts, boating, fishing and more.
Grand Lake, Colorado's largest natural lake, located north of Winter Park in Grand County, has even been dubbed by USA Today's 10Best rankings as No. 5 best lake in the U.S. for swimming.
Chase thrills on a Colorado whitewater rafting trip
For those wanting to live more on the wild side, Colorado's rivers and creeks are the perfect place for rafting trips.
Breckenridge's Blue River has a perfect three-mile trip for families visiting the mountain town, while those venturing further south could take on the Colorado River in Royal Gorge or Browns Canyon near Salida.
Closer to Denver, Idaho Springs and Golden's Clear Creek offer convenient rafting fun, as does Kremmling's Upper Colorado River trips.
Have fun with these things to do at Colorado ski resorts
While the namesake activity for Colorado's ski resorts may be out of season, there are still plenty of fun activities to do at some of Colorado's largest tourist attractions during the summer.
Take a scenic gondola ride or go on an e-bike tour at Winter Park Resort, or try the GoldRunner Coaster and Alpine Slide at Breckenridge Ski Resort. Keystone Ski Resort also has a whole list of summer festivals to enjoy:
- Keystone Bacon And Bourbon: June 21st - 22nd
- Keystone Wine and Jazz Festival: July 12th - 13th
- Keystone Bluegrass and Beer Festival: August 2nd - 3rd
- Mountain Town Food Festival: August 16th
- Keystone Oktoberfest: August 30th
Take a trip on the nation's highest continuous paved road
Rocky Mountain National Park's Highway to the Sky, Trail Ridge Road, is now open.
The highest continuous paved road in the U.S., Trail Ridge Road is a 48-mile stretch of U.S. 34 between Estes Park on the park's east side and Grand Lake on the west that offers unbeatable vistas of Colorado's mountains from above the treeline.
Pikas, marmots, ptarmigans and bighorn sheep are commonly seen along the way.
Ride one of these scenic trains
Sometimes the best way to see Colorado’s incredible landscapes is from the seat of a train as it whisks you through the mountains or along river gorges.
Readers of USA Today agreed, and even recently dubbed several Colorado railroads some of the best scenic train rides in the country in their 10Best rankings. Here are those rides not to miss:
- Georgetown Loop Railroad
- The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway
- Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad
- Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
Get a unique view of Colorado on horseback
Looking for a more unique perspective of Colorado's great outdoors? Try from the back of a horse.
Take a horseback ride through the wilderness near the Maroon Bells, or try one out near Rocky Mountain National Park.
There are also historic horseback riding opportunities near Central City to see historic cemeteries and mining sites.
Experience 'America's only mountaintop theme park'
Situated more than 7,000 feet above sea level in Glenwood Springs lies the nation's only mountaintop theme park, Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.
Take a thrilling ride on one of the park's rollercoasters or sit high above it all on the Giant Canyon Swing or Glenwood Canyon Flyer.
Then, explore the park's namesake caves, recently designated National Natural Landmark.
