The world’s most consumed cooking oil, international purchases of imported palm oil cost a total US$48.9 billion in 2025.

Overall, spending on palm oil imports decreased by -5.6% for all importing countries since 2021. Five years earlier, international purchases of palm oil cost $51.8 billion.

Year over year, globally imported palm oil accelerated by 12.9% compared to $43.3 billion starting from 2024.

An edible vegetable oil, palm oil is derived from the reddish pulp of oil palm plant fruit. Palm oil is a highly saturated vegetable fat used for lower-cost cooking, blending into mayonnaise and as a butter substitute. Palm oil is also an ingredient for biodiesel fuels.

The 5 biggest importers of palm oil are India, Pakistan, mainland China, Netherlands and the United States of America. Collectively, that quintet of major palm oil buyers imported about two-fifths (39.5%) of total palm oil purchased via international markets in 2025.

From a continental perspective, Asian countries imported the highest dollar worth of palm oil during 2025 with purchases valued at $28.2 billion or almost three-fifths (57.8%) of the global total. In second place were importers based in Europe at 17% while another 16.8% of palm oil imported worldwide was delivered to buyers in Africa.

Smaller percentages went to customers in North America (5.2%), Latin America (2.8%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, and Oceania (0.4%) led by Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 1511 for palm oil and its refractions, whether or not refined.

Below are the 15 countries that spent the most on imported palm oil during 2025.

  2. Pakistan: $3.8 billion (7.8%)
  3. mainland China: $3.5 billion (7.2%)
  4. Netherlands: $1.85 billion (3.8%)
  5. United States : $1.81 billion (3.7%)
  6. Bangladesh: $1.7 billion (3.5%)
  7. Egypt: $1.5 billion (3.1%)
  8. Philippines: $1.48 billion (3%)
  9. Vietnam: $1.11 billion (2.3%)
  10. Kenya: $1.05 billion (2.1%)
  11. Italy: $988.6 million (2%)
  12. Russia: $986.1 million (2%)
  13. Saudi Arabia: $903.8 million (1.8%)
  14. Germany: $867.6 million (1.8%)
  15. Türkiye: $845.9 million (1.7%)

By value, the listed 15 countries purchased approaching two-thirds (62.9%) of all palm oil imported in 2025.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing markets for palm oil since 2024 were: Philippines (up 44.7%), Bangladesh (up 31%), Pakistan (up 30.6%) and the Netherlands (up 20.5%).

Those countries that posted year-over-year declines in their imported palm oil purchases were: Italy (down -27.7%), India (down -3.9%), United States of America (down -3.9%) and Germany (down -1%).

The fastest-growing buyers among the top 100 palm oil importers were in Gambia (up 4,495% from 2024), Yemen (up 633.2%), Cuba (up 374.1%), Malaysia (up 314%), Ghana (up 308.2%) and Nigeria (up 203.9%).

Countries that experienced year-over-year declines in the value of their palm oil supplied to Indian importers included: United Arab Emirates (down -27%), Indonesia (down -22.2%), Singapore (down -20.4%) and Nepal (down -8.8%).

Overall, the value of India’s imported palm oil went down by an average -3.9% from all supplying countries since 2024 when palm oil purchased cost $8.7 billion.

Palm Oil Imported into Pakistan

Pakistan’s global purchases of imported palm oil totaled US$3.83 billion in 2025. Below are the top suppliers from which Pakistan imported the highest dollar value worth of palm oil during 2025. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country from 2024 to 2025.

Palm Oil Imported into the Netherlands

Dutch global purchases of imported palm oil totaled US$1.85 billion in 2025. Below are the top 15 suppliers from which the Netherlands imported the highest dollar value worth of palm oil during 2025. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country from 2024 to 2025.
