‘Namma Deve Gowda Appaji Canteen’ has been temporarily closed owing to the disruption in the supply of commercial gas cylinders in the city.

Named after former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, the canteen has been operating since 2017 with the objective of providing meals and snacks to people at highly subsidised prices.

The canteen, run by T.A. Sharavana, Member of the Legislative Council from the Janata Dal (Secular), was opened on the lines of the Indira Canteen scheme, which was launched in the same year by the Congress government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. However, Mr. Sharavana said on the social media platform X that recent disruptions in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders have made it difficult to operate the canteen.

“Due to the disruption in the supply of commercial gas cylinders, Namma Deve Gowda Appaji Canteen is becoming difficult to operate and has been temporarily closed. I have been running this canteen since 2017 to provide meals and snacks to the hungry at very low prices. The canteen will resume as usual once the gas cylinder supply returns to normal,” he wrote in the X.
