Officers were dispatched to a home near 15800 East Arkansas Dr. after receiving a call about a family disturbance around 6 p.m.
Police did not report details of the interaction, but stated that officers were involved in a shooting at the location.
Aurora police provided an update at 8:39 p.m. and said the investigation determined the disturbance was between a wife and husband. When officers arrived at the home, the couple separated, and the man went to the garage.
Officers were speaking with the man when he grabbed a handgun from a toolbox.
Officers gave him directions to drop the gun multiple times before he pointed the gun at officers, and the shooting occurred.
Aurora police said one officer fired and has been put on administrative leave in accordance with agency policy.
The man was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the department.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation of the incident, and APD's Internal Investigations Bureau is conducting an administrative investigation.
