According to the Cimarron Hills Fire Department (CHFD), around 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, crews responded to the 1200 block of Kachina Drive in Cimarron Hills on a report of a trench collapse with a person trapped. When crews arrived, CHFD said they found a man buried up to his shoulders in a 10 foot trench and a second person in the trench trying to dig the man out.
Crews assessed the man who was buried, and CHFD said he was alert and talking. The second person was removed from the trench to avoid endangering them.
Crews focused on keeping the man calm while they cordoned off an area of the trench that was susceptible to further collapse. The Colorado Springs Fire Department's (CSFD) Heavy Rescue Team was called in as well as a vacuum truck from Colorado Springs Utilities. After nearly two hours, crews were able to free the man around 12:30 p.m. and transport him to the hospital.
