DENVER (KDVR) — An investigation found evidence that the former Jefferson County Chief of Schools, who was terminated and later found dead, purchased child pornography.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said on Wednesday that the criminal investigation into David Weiss is complete after he was suspected of being involved in child pornography. The sheriff's office said that there was evidence that Weiss purchased child pornography online, but "Weiss had no direct criminal contact with any juveniles either in person or online."

This investigation comes after the sheriff's office said a cyber tip from a financial brokerage alerted authorities in December 2024 that Weiss used bitcoin to buy child pornography.

Weiss was subsequently fired, and a criminal investigation was opened. Nearly two weeks after Weiss was terminated, he died by suicide while in Maryland with family for the holidays.

The investigation took several months, as the sheriff's office said it obtained a search warrant and searched Weiss's house, confiscated and searched all known electronic devices associated with Weiss, including computers, iPads and cell phones. The Jefferson County R-1 School District was notified of the search warrant and cooperated, as he had access to children and electronics at work.

Investigators also looked into any potential child victims in our community before determining that there was evidence that Weiss purchased child pornography, but there was no direct physical contact with children.
