The incident happened just before 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Adams County Detention Facility, according to the sheriff's office.
The agency said that inmates alerted deputies in the jail to a female inmate who was unresponsive and "possibly experiencing a seizure."
Deputies, upon assessing the situation, determined she was experiencing an overdose and quickly transported her to an area hospital.
The agency said it was launching a full criminal investigation, but did not have further details about the overdose.
According to a 2022 Pew Charitable Trusts study on alcohol and drug overdose death rates, between 2009 and 2019, overdose deaths grew by a factor of five for incarcerated individuals.
