DELTA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) - The Idaho man who was convicted last week of killing two Paonia residents got mandatory life terms Monday.

Mark Burns, 69, killed Michael Arnold and Donna Gallegos inside their home in February 2022. He was arrested about two weeks later in Idaho and charged with two counts of first-degree homicide, two counts of aggravated robbery, first-degree burglary, menacing and tampering with physical evidence.

Burns will serve the life sentences consecutively and an additional 45 years for his other convictions.

Since his arrest, Burns was held in custody at the Delta County Jail. The trial started on May 19 before the jury began deliberations on Thursday, June 11. The jury took only eight hours to find Burns guilty on all charges.

"Cases such as this require professional support and collaboration by several agencies and staff. As Sheriff and Undersheriff, we want to recognize the hard work, partnerships, and the focus placed by all investigators, support staff and prosecutors on giving the victims of this heinous crime, Mr. Arnold and Ms. Gallegos, a voice and justice," Delta County Sheriff Mark Taylor and Undersheriff Quinn Archibeque said in a news release.

"As Sheriff and Undersheriff for Delta County, we feel this is a just verdict and we sincerely hope the verdict will help bring closure to the friends and family of Mr. Arnold and Ms. Gallegos."

The Colorado Attorney General's Office and the 21st Judicial District Attorney's Office prosecuted the case.
