At a housing announcement in Vaughan, Ont., on Wednesday, Premier Doug Ford provided remarks on the ongoing trade war between Canada and the United States. Ford began by acknowledging Tuesday's announcement from the federal government, outlining his full support of Carney's response to Trump's latest tariffs and adding that Ontario is delivering nearly $30B in tariff support to help businesses impacted by U.S. tariffs. When asked whether he's still willing to curtail the export of electricity from Ontario to the U.S., Ford said, "All options are on the table, in my opinion. But I can't do it alone. We have other provinces that send electricity down to the US. We all have to be on the same page." Ford provided a more conciliatory tone when speaking about the U.S. president, "I thought it would be best, just to simmer down," he said, "It was a heated day for both him and I going back and forth, but, it looks like he's simmered down, too. So let's get back to the table." However, the premier didn't hold back when it came to Canadian builders continuing to purchase materials from U.S. suppliers. "When you're at war, you protect your own. You protect your own backyard. You don't go down to the US and buy a product. There's nothing we can't make here in Ontario or across the country," Ford said, vowing he would hunt down and hold those who don't buy Canadian accountable.
