DENVER (KDVR) — The Denver metro area will be under a heat advisory over the next few days, and with these hot temperatures, taking a look at your air conditioning today is going to be important.

Air conditioning units will be working overtime the next few days, and HVAC techs like Garrett Weiler, the director at Fix-it 24-7, are just as busy.

"I'm not concerned about a lot of people calling because that’s already happening. We have a waitlist, and things are picking up. We’re busy, but we are definitely taking care of everybody as quickly as we can," he said.

Weiler walked FOX31's Gabby Easterwood through a step-by-step guide on what you can do now to stay cool.

"One of the best tips that you could possibly do for the least amount is to keep your fan at auto and just turn it on, and it acts like a big house fan and circulates the air throughout the home," said Weiler.

Another major tip: check and maybe change your air filter.

If it's dirty, it's time to change it. It's important to change it monthly, if possible, depending on the indoor air quality. Checking the coils in your outside unit is important too, to make sure they are clear of any dirt and dust.

These steps can help avoid issues and stay cool, but it’s important to know the signs just in case.

"There’s plenty of signs of trouble, loud noises, things that seem out of the ordinary, not keeping up on a hot day. We usually tell our customers to give us a call at that time," said Weiler.

Ideal temperatures for your thermometer, they said, are 74-72 during the day, but it does depend on comfort level.

It’s also a good idea to keep the blinds closed, block direct sunlight coming in and don't bake, which would increase the temperature inside.
