DENVER (KDVR) — Over the weekend, starting on June 20 and ending on June 21, the Colorado State Patrol set up temporary sobriety checkpoints in Douglas and Arapahoe Counties.

The two counties combined totaled 1025 contacts made and 10 arrests for people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Arapahoe County

People were stopped at the checkpoint, producing statistics, including:

  • Total contacts made: 42
  • Total DUI/D arrests: 4
  • Total roadsides: 7
  • Previous offenders: 1
  • Seatbelt citations: 1

Douglas County

On June 20 and 21, the checkpoints were set up from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. and produced statistics, including:

  • Total contacts made: 983
  • Total DUI/D arrests: 6
  • Total roadsides: 17

While troopers were stationed at the sobriety checkpoints, they encountered one wrong-way driver in the area surrounding the checkpoint.

CSP planned to have a sobriety checkpoint in Alamosa County on June 14, but it has been rescheduled to occur in the upcoming weeks.

CSP said that not all forms of DUI come under the influence of alcohol, and drugs can be included in the offense, both legal and illegal.

Medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect driving if used improperly. CSP said to always check the instructions for the medication or drug, and to be cautious of driving and operating heavy machinery warnings.

CSP also said that while the use of medicinal and recreational marijuana is legal, driving while under its influence still remains against the law.

Troopers encourage those who know they are going to be under the influence of a medication, drug or alcohol to plan on staying home, finding a ride-share driver, using public transportation or traveling with a designated driver.

A DUI arrest can lead to jail time, fines, fees and classes that can exceed $13,000.

CSP asks that anyone who sees signs of somebody driving under the influence contact Colorado State Patrol at *277.
