MORRISON (KDVR) — With warmer weather back in the forecast, Colorado’s most popular trailheads are expecting weekend crowds, and search and rescue teams are urging hikers to be prepared.

The Colorado Search and Rescue Association said calls for help are already outpacing last year. So far this year, the organization has responded to 59 requests — up from 47 at this time in 2024.

“We like to talk about the 3 Ts of preparedness,” said Anna DeBattiste with Colorado Search and Rescue. “Those three Ts stand for trip planning, training and taking the essentials.”

Officials said hikers should always pack more water than they think they’ll need, tell someone where they’re going and turn back before they’re tired. While many visitors fear bears or mountain lions, rescue teams said moose can pose a more serious threat.

Beyond wildlife encounters, changing weather is one of the biggest concerns. Earlier this month, a pair of hikers had to be airlifted off a summit after being struck by lightning. The Alpine Rescue Team said that incident alone required assistance from the National Guard — and they’ve had more than a half-dozen additional calls since then.

Dawn Wilson with Alpine Rescue Team said one common mistake can lead to trouble: chasing a photo opportunity.

“One thing we see is really common is this,” Wilson said, miming a selfie. “They do things they shouldn’t be doing just so they can post it on social media later on and say, ‘Look what I did!’ Be smart — your life, your health, your sanity is not worth a selfie.”

Colorado’s search and rescue services are free. If someone is injured, lost, or in danger, experts say don’t hesitate to call 911.
