Gig workers on Tuesday stated that a possible shortage of LPG and CNG supplies in parts of the country could severely affect platform workers, especially those engaged in app-based transport and delivery services.

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU) and the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) said the ongoing international conflict and disruptions in fuel logistics could affect LPG and CNG supplies over the next one to two days.

According to the unions, thousands of drivers operate LPG and CNG vehicles while working on app-based platforms such as Ola, Uber and Rapido. These workers rely on uninterrupted access to affordable fuel to sustain their daily livelihoods. Any disruption in supply could lead to long queues at fuel stations, fewer trips and an immediate loss of income for drivers already grappling with rising operational costs.

TGPWU and IFAT urged both the Central and State governments to closely monitor the situation and ensure uninterrupted LPG and CNG supply in urban centres. They also appealed to aggregator companies to support workers through transparent communication and to avoid imposing penalties for service disruptions beyond their control.

Shaik Salauddin, an office bearer of the unions, said, “Restaurant aggregators could face difficulties if hotels, restaurants and home-based kitchens experience disruptions due to LPG shortages, potentially affecting order volumes and earnings.”
