Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayJEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) – The extremely hot days as summer begins have some firefighters sending out warnings about setting off fireworks.
Some firefighters said people may think it’s safe to set off fireworks because of the abundance of green vegetation spurred on by recent rains.
However, that green vegetation is drying out quickly due to near triple-digit temperatures expected on both Friday and Saturday.
High winds are also expected to play a role in creating more fire dangers.
Firefighters said people can be lured into a false sense of security because the terrain may not look so dry.
“In fact, they very much are. There's still a lot of dead and dormant material that's underneath that green grass and those green weeds, and that can often ignite the fire, and then that starts spreading to the vegetation that otherwise looks like it wouldn't burn, but it will,” Aurora Fire Rescue Eric Hurst Public Information Officer Eric Hurst said.
Aurora firefighters said that fireworks that don’t generally leave the ground or explode are allowed in their city, but Aurora Fire and Rescue warned that even those fireworks can still pose real dangers.
In the foothills, there is concern, too.
“It's risk, you know, there's, there's a fun side to it, but it's a risk to your property. Your neighbor's property can turn into a big incident like that with the high winds we're seeing in the dry fuels,” West Metro Fire Captain Chris Rhoads said.
FOX31 was told fireworks are illegal in most of Colorado.
Various fire departments suggest you understand the rules and regulations in your municipality, since they can be very different from each other and change throughout the year.
