More than 5,000 people were reported under evacuation orders as wildfires continued to burn across British Columbia. Cliff Chapman, provincial director of wildfire operations with the B.C. Wildfire Service, said record drought conditions are driving unprecedented fire behaviour and warned that hotter, drier weather and more lightning could fuel additional fires throughout August. Chapman said the fire situation in B.C. is “dynamic” and that drought conditions are at record levels, resulting in “explosive fire behaviour” in the province. “We are seeing fire behaviour and fire growth that we have never experienced in B.C. up until this point because of the drought conditions,” Chapman added, noting teams are doing everything they can to contain the fires and protect homes and structures in the path of the flames.
