Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDENVER (KDVR) — A father and son were successfully rescued after a 15-hour, overnight rescue mission, according to a social media post from the Summit County Sheriff's Office.
The father and son began a hike at 10 a.m. on Thursday on Quandary Peak just outside of Breckenridge.
The two wanted to climb the more adept trail on the west side of the ridge, but lost their way from the path and required assistance.
They sent a rescue alert via a mobile device, and at 8:30 p.m., sheriff's deputies dispatched to the area near the climbers.
A Flight for Life helicopter took a crew from the Summit County Rescue Group partially up the mountain, but below the spot where the father and son were located. The crew had to hike to the lost climbers.
Daylight faded, and high winds and cold temperatures left the father-son duo exhausted. Rather than risk making the trip in the cold and dark of the night, camp was set up, and the rescue crew gave the climbers warmer clothes, as they were only dressed for a daytime excursion.
On Friday morning, with light back in play, a Black Hawk helicopter made its way to the mountain and helped lift the rescuees from their camp, while the rescue team hiked back down the mountain.
Due to the overnight camping stay, the total rescue time ended up being around 15 hours, according to the Summit County Sheriff's Office.
No injuries occurred during the rescue.
The Summit County Sheriff's Office thanked the Summit County Rescue Group, Flight for Life Colorado, High-Altitude Army National Guard Aviation Training Site, Vail Mountain Rescue Group and Colorado Search and Rescue Association for their roles in the rescue.
