Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDENVER (KDVR) — ESPN SportsCenter is planning a stop in Colorado on its cross-country tour this summer for a popular baseball team — but it's not the Rockies.
ESPN announced the "50 States in 50 Days" tour on Monday, which brings its anchors, production and cameras across the country, including a stop in Colorado for the Savannah Bananas' game at Coors Field.
The flagship news and information program at ESPN is bringing the show to each state by highlighting "unique events, hometown stories, and the athletes that define each region." ESPN is stopping by for the MLB Home Run Derby in Atlanta and the Women's National Basketball Association All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis before making its way to Colorado in August.
ESPN covering Savannah Bananas at Coors Field
On Aug. 9, crews will set up in downtown Denver for a baseball game, but it won't be for the Colorado Rockies. ESPN is planning on covering the Savannah Bananas, who are playing at Coors Field on Aug. 9 and 10.
The Savannah Bananas are a viral baseball team known for their comical performances. They're part of a league known as Banana Ball, which has different rules and focuses on entertainment with more continuous playing and fewer lulls. The games are known to involve singing, trick plays and dancing.
ESPN said people can expect "hometown hero" Gary Striewski to anchor the program. Striewski is a morning anchor for SportsCenter and graduated from Metropolitan State College of Denver with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism.
An ESPN spokesperson said they decided to cover the Bananas at Coors Field because it was a team they wanted to cover during this project, and the Coors Field date worked with the schedule. They also said Striewski, whose hometown is in Colorado, was the perfect fit for the Bananas coverage.
The tour will feature "live on-site shows and storytelling segments from a different state each day." All the stops on the tour are listed on ESPN's website.
