DENVER (KDVR) — The owner of a Denver remodeling company called Denver Remodeling Incorporated called police after he says someone stole more than $10,000 worth of equipment from his trailer.

The troubling part is that there were no cameras to capture the theft.

Steve Beam and his wife Audra started their business at the beginning of this year.

"January 2nd of this year," said Steve. "Prior to that, it was this company, Steven Beam Handyman. Doing smaller handyman projects, but I sort of outgrown that. So, I started doing bigger projects.”

With bigger projects comes more high-value tools.

“Pretty honest work," said Steve. "I sinked that money back into the business by buying these tools."

He was surprised to get a call from one of his employees in the wee hours of Wednesday morning after nearly finishing a job at the intersection of 20th and Holly Street in Denver.

“He said the trailer was broken into and all the nail guns are gone," said Steve. "Whoever came by to mark the trailer, marked the side entrance. I never seen this before, but it was spray-painted. Someone marked it. The police officer believes someone came by later, saw the marked sign and knew this was where to hit. So they cut the latch away from the lock rather than cutting the lock, then it’s just as simple as taking my stuff."

Steve learned he made a few mistakes. Not cataloging his inventory, registering his tools or writing down his serial numbers.

“It's a setback because this is like my baby and someone broke in and messed with my stuff," said Steve. "It takes a long time to accumulate that amount of tools.”

He hopes the person or people responsible will do the right thing.

"People do this for a living," said Steve. "I can’t think of anything worse than stealing from the working class.”

In just a few days, the community has rallied behind Steve, raising more than $4,500 through a GoFundMe.

"I would just say thank you for everyone for helping out," said Steve. "I'm extremely humbled by it. I just pay it forward, because there's no way I can pay it back."

Meanwhile, if you know the people or person responsible, you are urged to call the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
