Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayGOLDEN, Colo. (KDVR) -- It was a busy holiday for the Golden Fire Department, and the rescue crews there aren’t slowing down as the holiday wraps up, anticipating more calls to continue after Fourth of July celebrations.
“We expect a higher call volume during a holiday weekend," said David Wolf, Battalion Chief of Special Operations for the Golden Fire Department.
He said fireworks dangers are at the top of their mind, with concerns over multiple factors.
“We worry about fireworks starting a wildfire, grass fire or injuring people," said Wolf.
Despite the holiday, they stayed fully staffed with their daily routine of three available fire engines.
“We also have three medic units that are staffed during the day and two that are staffed at night," said Wolf.
While talking with FOX31's Nate Belt, Wolf was called to a water rescue on Clear Creek after tubers got stuck in the water.
“Came off their tubes, got a little bit scraped up, we just helped them back up to the trail," said Wolf.
His team used ropes and other safety gear to help them out of the water without injury.
“We put them in a life jacket, we put them in a helmet and then they didn’t have shoes, so we had a pair of rescue shoes that we put them in and used that to help get them up," said Wolf.
He said water rescues like this have kept them busy all week, averaging between two and three calls like this one per day. Wolf asks people to be smart so the busy weekend he’s preparing for isn’t so busy after all.
“Take those precautions, not put themselves in a bad situation, whether it's with the river, with fireworks or other things," said Wolf. "We want people to be safe, we want them to enjoy the outdoors, enjoy the great city here.”
He reminds people that when it comes to fireworks, anything that goes into the air or explodes is illegal in Colorado. As for tubing, he encourages wearing a life jacket, a helmet and water shoes if you plan to get in the river.
