Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by Adpathway(COLORADO) — As the Israel and Iran conflict continues in the Middle East, many in the U.S. are asking 'Can I be drafted?'
While an initial ceasefire seemed to have been reached as of Tuesday, June 24, it all seemed to falter after Israel claimed that Iran had bombed them, and two missiles were intercepted. As of Tuesday evening, the fragile ceasefire seems to be holding.
There is no concrete indication that a draft could happen in 2025, but if it did, those who are registered could be chosen at random to be drafted.
A draft is also officially known as the Selective Service, a government bureau of the Defense Department, but how exactly does it work?
The draft requires almost all male U.S. citizens and immigrants, who are 18 through 25, to register with the Selective Service. In a national emergency or war that can't be supported by an all-volunteer military, Congress and the president can reinstate the draft, and men would be called in a sequence determined by a random lottery number and year of birth, according to military.com.
Check out more about who can be drafted here:
Those who are picked would be examined for mental, physical, and moral fitness by the military before being deferred, or exempted, from military service or inducted into the Armed Forces. Individuals who fail to register may face penalties such as fines, imprisonment, and ineligibility for government jobs or workforce programs.
While legislation has had recent talks about including women in the draft, women are currently not required to sign up. If they ever were, Congress would need to pass legislation amending the current law.
Another common misconception: men who are the "only son", "the last son to carry the family name", and "sole surviving son" do not have to register nor cannot get drafted. This is false. These men can be drafted and must register with the Selective Service.
If Congress and the President were to reinstate a military draft, the National Draft Lottery would establish the priority of call based on the birth dates of registrants. Those turning 20 in the calendar year would be called first, then those who are turning 21 second, and so on. Younger men would not be called until men in the 20-25 age group are called.
The lottery system is based on random selection of birth dates, with the order of priority for reporting assigned at random as well. The last time anyone was ever drafted was on June 30, 1973, and there were 646 inductions for the Vietnam War. During that conflict, over a million men were drafted.
Americans are not currently being drafted for the ongoing crisis amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
