DENVER (KDVR) -- Police have been issuing fewer and fewer citations for illegal fireworks in Denver in recent years.

FOX31 obtained data from the Denver Police Department showing how many citations were issued for fireworks between June 15 and July 6 each year from 2017 to 2025.

Police issued six citations for fireworks from June 15 to July 5 this year, an increase compared to about the same period each year since 2021, but a fraction of what that data point used to be.

According to data from DPD, police issued from 19 to 57 citations between June 15 to July 6 each year from 2017 to 2020. For the same period in 2021, that dropped to two citations.

Police provided the data for fireworks citations issued each year between June 15 to July 6, except 2025, which includes data for June 15 to July 5.

  • 2025: 6 citations
  • 2024: 3 citations
  • 2023: 4 citations
  • 2022: 1 citations
  • 2021: 2 citations

Data for calls reporting fireworks in Denver

Police also provided data on how many people called 911 to report fireworks.

In recent years, many agencies, including DPD, have asked residents to avoid calling 911 unless there is an emergency, as it can clog up phone lines, and instead report fireworks either online or through a non-emergency dispatch line.

The data reflects a decrease in most years, except 2020, when a total of 5,389 people called 911 to report fireworks in Denver between June 15 and July 6.

  • 2025: 1,590 calls
  • 2024: 1,590 calls
  • 2023: 1,930 calls
  • 2022: 2,052 calls
  • 2021: 1,233 calls
  • 2020: 5,389 calls
  • 2019: 1,477 calls
  • 2018: 2,162 calls
  • 2017: 3,102 calls

A spokesperson told FOX31 that the Denver Police Department had no comment to offer regarding the data.

Police encourage Denver residents to report the use or sale of illegal fireworks online or by calling 720-913-2000.
