DENVER (KDVR) — A recent string of car break-ins in one of Denver’s wealthiest neighborhoods has residents and business owners questioning the effectiveness of local police patrols.

According to the Denver Police Department’s crime data, at least 25 vehicles were broken into in the Cherry Creek area in the past month. Several victims told FOX31 the actual number is likely much higher, because many people don’t bother reporting incidents they feel won’t be investigated.

Moe Torabbeigi, who owns a business in the area, said his cars were broken into twice in two separate secure garages.

“I called police, they just gave a report on the phone — they didn’t even show up,” Torabbeigi said.

One victim, who asked not to be named, said her car was broken into inside a secure apartment garage and that she has yet to receive any updates from police about the case.

Other residents told FOX31 that the crimes have become so routine, they’ve stopped filing reports altogether.

“They know what they are doing,” one shopper said. “These aren’t rookies.”

Denver police told FOX31 they continue to encourage the public to report all crimes and to avoid leaving valuables inside vehicles. Some victims said the department’s advice rings hollow without consistent follow-up or a visible presence in the neighborhood.

“I don’t ever see a police car here,” Torabbeigi added. “We need more police.”

A valet attendant at a nearby hotel said their team is now taking additional security measures, including doubling security in their garage and re-checking all car doors at night.

From luxury condos to small shops, many in Cherry Creek say they’re hoping for change.
