The Castle Rock Police Department said the marked vehicle was stopped with emergency lights activated at the time of the crash.
The officer was out of the vehicle when the police department said a driver crashed into the patrol vehicle from behind.
The police department described the incident in a post on Facebook as a "close call." The vehicle that crashed into the police car caught on fire and firefighters responded.
Police said that remarkably, no one was seriously injured in the crash.
A spokesperson for the police department told FOX31 that the police vehicle was totaled after the crash. Colorado State Patrol is investigating the incident.
The police department offered a reminder that Colorado law requires drivers to move over at least one lane and slow down when passing or approaching an emergency vehicle that is stopped with lights flashing.
