DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — New dashboard and body camera footage shows the lengths local sheriffs took to take down a suspected car thief using Flock cameras, stop sticks, trackers, drones and K-9s in a recent pursuit.

Footage shows the start of a Douglas County pursuit on the night of June 20 after deputies got an alert from a Flock camera, which is a camera network that includes license plate recognition software, about a stolen car.

Loveland police chief discusses ATF search of license plate cameras with ICE subject line

“Stolen vehicles is the nexus for most property crimes and even some persons crimes like robberies and things like that,” Sheriff Darren Weekly said. “So systems like the Flock systems that do the license plate readers, they tell you in real time when criminals are coming into your community.”

Weekly told FOX31 his deputies quickly spotted the car in question, following it from Interstate 25 and the Lincoln area to the Park Meadows Mall.

“At that time, they set up stop sticks around Park Meadows Mall, but the suspect was able to get out of that area,” Weekly said.

About that time, Weekly said, supervisors decided it was getting too dangerous and called off the car pursuit.

“But before that happened, the deputy was able to deploy what's called a StarChase onto the vehicle,” Weekly said. “It’s a device that deploys from the patrol car and sticks to the back of the suspect vehicle.”

The tracker made it possible to see the car moving into Arapahoe County, so deputies called the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office and continued.

Denver voted to not extend its Flock camera contract: Are ICE access concerns valid?

“The vehicle was located near an open space area that was very wooded,” Weekly said. “We deployed a drone. We also deployed that K-9 unit to track these suspects down. And it was the dog that ended up tracking them into a highly dense wooded area.”

The pursuit ended with two arrests. The driver was arrested for motor vehicle theft, vehicular eluding, violation of a protection order, a misdemeanor warrant, obstructing a peace officer, possession of a dangerous or illegal weapon and criminal possession of a financial device. The passenger was issued a summons and released for obstructing a peace officer.

“I just think that any time that you give up or you don't want to put these kinds of resources into keeping your community safe, or it's just one more stolen vehicle versus one more bad guy that got away, all you're doing is telling other criminals that your community is vulnerable,” Weekly said. “We're going to hold the line in Douglas County. We're going to go out of our way to capture these people by whatever means necessary.”
