Boston Scientific, one of the world’s leading medical device manufacturers, has officially approved a comprehensive global restructuring plan. While the strategy aims to streamline international operations, cut costs, and optimize supply chains, questions remain regarding the exact impact on the company’s extensive footprint in Costa Rica.

Addressing the national context, Boston Scientific reaffirmed its long-standing commitment:

“Costa Rica has been an important part of Boston Scientific’s global organization for more than 25 years.”

Key Elements of the Global Restructuring Plan

According to regulatory filings submitted to U.S. authorities and initially reported by Reuters, Boston Scientific’s Board of Directors approved the restructuring plan on July 21. The rollout will begin this year and execute in phased stages through late 2029.

Financial & Operational Highlights

Timeline: 2026 – 2029 (Gradual Phase-In)

Estimated Restructuring Costs: $700 Million – $800 Million (Pre-tax)

Expected Cash Outflows: $600 Million – $700 Million

Projected Annual Savings: ~$500 Million per year once fully implemented

Core Focus Areas: Supply chain optimization, production reallocations, structural reorganization, and workforce adjustments.

Strategic Objectives & Operations Adjustment

Supply Chain Optimization: The company plans to realign production across different manufacturing sites globally to improve operational efficiency and cost structure.

Workforce Realignment: While certain roles and positions will be eliminated globally, Boston Scientific noted that hiring will continue in targeted high-growth sectors and strategic expansion areas.

Resource Reallocation: Capital and personnel will be shifted to support expanding high-demand global markets.

Costa Rica’s Strategic Role in the Network

Despite global job realignments, Boston Scientific has not specified whether any production plants or facilities in Costa Rica will face reductions. Several factors highlight the country’s central role in the company’s long-term vision:

  • Recent Expansion in Cartago: Just months ago, the company inaugurated a massive 51,000-square-meter manufacturing facility in Cartago, currently employing approximately 1,000 workers.
  • Key Export Contributor: Figures from Costa Rica’s Ministry of Foreign Trade (COMEX) indicate that Boston Scientific accounts for roughly 18% of the country’s total national exports.
  • Trade Advocacy: Late last year, Boston Scientific actively petitioned the U.S. government to exempt Costa Rica and CAFTA-DR signatories from potential tariffs on medical devices, emphasizing the region’s indispensable position in its global supply chain.

Looking Ahead

As Boston Scientific begins rolling out its multi-year strategy, industry analysts and local stakeholders will be watching closely to see how production allocations shift between international hubs. For now, the company’s substantial investments and high export contribution underscore Costa Rica’s enduring importance to its global manufacturing ecosystem.
