DENVER (KDVR) -- Fire agencies across the Denver metro had a busy Independence Day weekend, with house fires caused by fireworks in some areas and large wildfires in others.

For Arvada Fire, the calls just kept coming in between the 4th and 5th of July. According to the department, crews responded to 16 fires between Friday and Saturday, and they suspect 13 of them to be fireworks-related.

"We don't like telling people how they can or can't celebrate the Fourth of July," the agency said in a Facebook post. "However, these incidents are an example of the dangers of fireworks and why we post so often about leaving them to the pros! Grasses and fuels are dry and receptive to sparks, making fireworks a very real threat to homes and our Wildland Urban Interface."

Arvada Fire said most of the fires were small outdoor ones, but a few became larger grass fires or threatened homes.

The largest happened at about 9:40 p.m. on Independence Day off West 78th Drive in the Spring Mesa neighborhood. Though the fire was less than an acre, its flame height was several feet.

Crews were able to get the fire under control in less than 10 minutes.

Callers to 911 reported fireworks in the area, and officials did find some in the area of origin. Arvada police cited one person as well.

"Thanks to quick work from our C and B Shift crews, these fires over the holiday were all contained without damage to homes or people," Arvada Fire said. "Had it been windier, the outcomes could've been much different."
