Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayAnthony and Joe Russo, the brother filmmaking duo behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, have discussed the fate of the Avengers movies post-Avengers: Secret Wars at SXSW London.
Accompanied by Donald Mustard, an AGBO partner and collaborator on the Avengers films, the brothers confirmed the heavily anticipated Avengers: Doomsday is currently in post-production, while Avengers: Secret Wars is in pre-production. Both films are scheduled for December releases this year and next, as the 39th and 40th MCU instalments, respectively.
Avengers: Doomsday will be a major, pivotal event in the Avengers series, bringing numerous other Marvel teams together with the Avengers to take down Doom, including the X-Men (from 20th Century Fox), the Fantastic Four, the Wakandans, and the New Avengers.
Meanwhile, Avengers: Secret Wars will expand the multiverse crossover, spotlighting collapsed realities and Doom’s Battleworld realm.
Anthony Russo responded to questions on whether the Avengers will return to the big screen after such major events.
“When we did Endgame, we were like, we’ve completed it. It was our fourth Marvel film, though,” Russo explained. “We had completed a story arc that we began in The Winter Soldier, and for us it was very much intended to be an ending.”
“So, I will say this. The stories that we’re focused on now are complete,” the filmmaker added. “Doomsday and Secret Wars speak with one another as two films, and they form a complete expression.”
“Whether or not we all collaborate with Marvel beyond that is certainly a possibility, but right now, the vision, the narrative vision is just for Secret Wars.”
His brother Joe Russo jokingly added the team were “going to see what we look like in photos in 2028 and [they would] let you know.”
“We are still doing some work on Doomsday and will be until probably they rip it out of our hands in November, and that just means they have to give it to other people to finish it for a few weeks,” Joe Russo added. “Then we’re in the middle of what we would call pre-production… we like doing many things at the same time.”
Anthony Russo concluded by affirming the duo’s “relationship with Marvel has been built over many years now, and there’s been a very fruitful relationship. We’ve done some of our best work with Marvel. We really value the relationship, and I think they really value what we have brought to the MCU.”
Avengers: Doomsday hits cinemas on December 18th, while Avengers: Secret Wars hits cinemas on December 17th, 2027.
