The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have confirmed a three-match T20I series between the two teams in September 2026. The series will be played at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi, with all three matches scheduled at the same venue.

The upcoming contest will add another chapter to the growing cricketing relationship between the two nations, with Afghanistan continuing to use neutral venues for its home fixtures.

Afghanistan to play India in three T20Is in Delhi

The series will begin on September 13, followed by the second T20I on September 15 and the third match on September 17. All three games will start at 7:00 PM local time. The series is part of Afghanistan’s Future Tours Program and will be played in India. Afghanistan have used India and the UAE to host their home fixtures in recent years.

The two teams last played a bilateral T20I series in January 2024, when India hosted Afghanistan across Mohali, Indore and Bengaluru. India won that three-match series. The upcoming series will also complete a full-format run of bilateral cricket between the two sides in 2026. India recently hosted Afghanistan for a Test and three ODIs in June.

T20I series comes ahead of Asian Games

The three matches will be particularly important for India as they come just days before the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The men’s cricket competition will be played in the T20 format from September 24, with the final scheduled for October 3. India are among 10 teams set to participate in the competition, alongside Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Japan, Nepal, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Oman.

The series will also allow newly appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer to assess India’s combinations ahead of the Asian Games. India have endured a difficult run in T20Is recently, suffering series defeats against Ireland and England before recovering with a 3-0 victory over Zimbabwe.

With the Asian Games campaign approaching, the Afghanistan series will provide players such as Vaibhav Suryavanshi with valuable T20I game time while allowing the team management to fine-tune its plans before the continental competition.
