Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDENVER (KDVR) — Advocates for Jalin Seabron refused to leave the Colorado Attorney General's Office on Tuesday until they were addressed, and now have plans to meet with Attorney General Phil Weiser about the case.
Jalin Seabron, 23, was shot and killed outside a Highlands Ranch Main Event location after deputies responded to an active shooter call. In April, 23rd Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler said that the deputy was justified in fatally shooting Seabron on Feb. 8.
Seabron was once a suspect in the shooting, but later was found not to have been the alleged shooter inside the event center. Instead, a woman is facing over 100 charges for the shooting.
On Tuesday, members of Justice for Jalin went to the AG's office to deliver a formal legal rebuttal regarding the findings of the Critical Incident Response Team report, which the group says was used to justify Brauchler's decision not to charge the involved deputy.
“We didn’t come to beg, we came to require," said MiDian Shofner, CEO of The Epitome of BLack Excellence and Partnership, in a press release. "The life of Jalin Seabron cannot be minimized to a footnote in Colorado’s pattern of failed justice. We are not asking for permission to grieve with dignity. We are demanding that the full weight of the law be applied evenly, especially when it is those sworn to protect us who do the killing. The legal rebuttal speaks for itself. Now it’s time for the Attorney General to speak to us.”
The group shared its rebuttal document with members of the media on Tuesday. Salient points noted in the document include an alleged misapplication of the objective reasonableness standard, forensic evidence that does not align with officer narratives, and omission of critical eyewitness testimony.
"The legal rebuttal presents a detailed, evidence-based refutation of the CIRT conclusions and raises serious concerns about the validity and integrity of the investigative process," the group stated in a release.
The team did not have a meeting scheduled with Weiser, but said they refused to leave until addressed. Their legal rebuttal was hand-delivered to a deputy at the office and said that their demand to meet with Weiser has been granted, with a meeting now scheduled.
The agenda for that meeting includes:
The Attorney General’s formal position on the legal rebuttal submitted
- Confirmation on whether the AG’s Office intends to open an investigation into the facts and procedural handling of Jalin Seabron’s case
- A defined timeline for any planned actions or next steps
- A dedicated question-and-answer session with the advocacy team
The Justice for Jalin movement said that more information, including updates on the upcoming meeting and next steps, will be released in the coming days.
