DENVER (KDVR) — One suspect is dead after police said they chased and shot an allegedly armed man outside a middle school in Denver on Monday night.

Around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, Denver Police Department Chief Ron Thomas said Denver police and Denver Public School Safety officers responded to a call of two people near the front of Kepner Beacon Middle School.

Officers found a man and a woman near the front of the school, and Thomas said they were able to contact them and get their identifications. While officers were doing a warrant check on both of them, Thomas said the man asked if he could leave, and the officers said he couldn't. The man then allegedly backed away and ran while pulling out a weapon.

Thomas said officers then chased a man and told him to drop the weapon. The man allegedly didn't drop the weapon and fired at officers while trying to flee. Two Denver police officers and a Denver safety officer then returned fire and hit the man.

Officers were able to secure the weapon and call for medical. Thomas said the man was sent to the hospital but later died from his injuries. No one else was injured.

During the chase, Thomas said the woman disappeared and they don't know where she is at this time, but they have her identification and believe they will be able to contact her as she is a witness.

Kerridge spoke with one neighbor, Adrina Carbajal, who said she heard over 10 rounds of gunshots from inside the house. She lives in the area near the school with her four children, who play in the area almost every day.

"It's kind of hard to see them desensitized to what's happening, and they're just kind of like 'oh again? Another bad thing that happened,' they've witnessed so much around here, it's kinda, they're not shocked by it," said Carbajal.

Carbajal said it wasn't the first shooting they've witnessed in the area, and people hang around the neighborhood at night, but police were quick to respond to this incident.

Thomas said the officers involved in the shooting are going through officer-involved shooting protocol, and are being interviewed by members of the Denver Police homicide, Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The investigation will then be turned over to the district attorney.

Denver Public Schools told FOX31's Kasia Kerridge in a statement:

"Three DPS patrol officers were on scene and have been placed on paid administrative leave by Denver Public Schools while the investigation into the shooting occurs," said DPS in part of a statement. The Denver Public Schools Department of Climate and Safety has two types of officers. Campus Safety Officers (CSO) are in every middle school and high school in the district and carry non-lethal weapons. Patrol officers are armed with lethal force weapons who patrol the district to respond to calls for assistance from all schools."
