German officials canceled a major Pride festival on Saturday after a white van drove into the Berlin celebration, leaving multiple people injured and one person dead.

Berlin Police said officers and emergency crews were sent to the Großer Tiergarten as the situation unfolded, urging festivalgoers to clear the area. “We are currently deployed with numerous police forces as well as rescue units from the Berlin Fire Department in the Großer Tiergarten,” the department said in a translated post on X.

Police said rescue teams were treating the injured at the scene.

The crash took place during Berlin’s annual Christopher Street Day festival, a prominent LGBTQ+ Pride event in the European capital.

Authorities said they had launched an extensive search for those involved. “We are conducting an intensive manhunt for suspects,” police said, later noting that investigators were looking for one or more possible suspects.

Officials have not released any possible motive.

In an update, the police said several of those injured have life-threatening injuries. 

Hundreds of thousands of people turned out for the event, which included a parade and ended Saturday evening with a show at Tiergarten park near Brandenberg Gate.
