What Lifted the Mood
Both parts of the survey improved. The Present Situation Index, which tracks how households see current conditions, rose 8.6 points to 120.4.
The Expectations Index, which looks six months ahead, rose 6.9 points to 72.6. The Conference Board said the gain came mainly from better views of current and future business conditions.
Why It Matters Beyond the US
Consumer spending is the largest part of the US economy, so shifts in household mood are watched closely. Many Latin American exporters, from Mexican factories to Brazilian farms, sell into that demand.
A confident US shopper can mean steadier orders for those exporters. Their sales to the US depend on American demand holding up.
What Is Not Known Yet
Confidence is a survey of opinion, not a count of purchases. It is not yet clear whether the October mood will lead to higher spending in the shops.
The Conference Board’s own summary says confidence remains on a long-term downward trend, so one strong month does not yet make a turn. The November reading will show whether the rebound holds.
