Nicknamed “The Bay State” and located in America’s northeastern region known as New England, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts shipped US$38.8 billion worth of exported products around the globe in 2025.

That dollar amount represents an 18.8% increase from $32.7 billion four years earlier in 2022.

Year over year, the overall value of goods exported from Massachusetts accelerated by 10.8% compared to $35 billion during 2024.

Massachusetts ranks as America’s 17th biggest exporters by state lagging front-runners including Texas, California, New York state, Louisiana, Illinois and Florida.

The value of Massachusetts’ exports equals 1.8% of the United States’ overall exported products for 2025 ($2.178 trillion), up from 1.7% for 2024.

Massachusetts’ exported products represent 4.7% of the state’s total economic output or nominal Gross Domestic Product in 2025 ($820.1 billion).

Given Massachusetts’ population of over 7 million people, its total US$38.8 billion in 2025 exports translates to roughly $5,500 for every resident in the Bay State. That dollar metric exceeds the average $4,900 per capita one year earlier during 2024.

Massachusetts’ unemployment rate was 4.4% in July 2026, down from 4.5% one year earlier per YCharts.

Massachusetts’ top 10 exports generated over one third (38.7%) of the overall value of the state’s global shipments.

Gold waste and scrap posted the fastest annual gain among Massachusetts’ top 10 export categories, up by 628.8% from 2024.

In second place were miscellaneous digital processing units (up 334.5%) trailed by mixed immunological products in unmeasured doses (up 67.7%), then unwrought gold (up 54.2%).

Exports from Massachusetts for liquid filters and purification machines (down -28.5% from 2024) and machinery for making semi-conductors (down -19.6%) recorded the severest year-over-year declines.

Massachusetts incurred an overall -US$4 billion deficit exporting and importing products during 2025. That dollar amount swelled by -50.7% compared to -$8.2 billion in red ink in 2024.

All told, imports into Massachusetts amounted to $42.8 billion during 2025.

Massachusetts has highly negative net exports in the international trade of items made from precious metals as well as petroleum-related products. In turn, these cashflows indicate Massachusetts’ competitive disadvantages under related product categories.

Asia’s percentage compares at 16.8% of export sales from Massachusetts arriving mostly in mainland China, Singapore and Japan).

Another 15.8% went to top Massachusettsan customers in Canada and Mexico.
