Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Tom Holland has shed insight into a previous cut of the 38th MCU feature installment during the film’s press run. The fourth Spider-Man film under the Marvel Cinematic canon sees Holland return as New York’s Peter Parker, dealing with his ongoing protection of his home city, the fallout of making his loved ones forget who he is, a new imposing threat and his superpowers undergoing a strange evolution.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day additionally stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo, and follows Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as previous MCU features.

Holland recently touched upon having  “seen loads of different cuts” of the film, including a version which allegedly took place in the multiverse the Marvel film world has been exploring since 2016 with Doctor Strange.

What’s really interesting is, we’ve seen loads of different cuts of this movie, and one of the cuts was, they took all of the notes from all of the random people that saw the film, and they changed the movie,” the MCU star shared. “And then, we watched it and we hated it.”

It totally didn’t work. And it’s what the people were asking for, but it wasn’t quite what we wanted as the creatives,” he added. “But they learned lessons from that experience. So, a movie can change in a thousand different ways in the edit room.

Holland has recently appeared in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey as Telemachus, alongside Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, and told GQ about how witnessing the Oppenheimer director’s process with making a film inspired him to  “lay down the law” with Marvel and Sony.

We are not going to come to set and figure it out; we need to know why we are making this movie beyond the fact that it’s Spider-Man4 and they make loads of money and we’re going to just have a big summer,” the actor told Spider-Man producers. “Why are we making this movie?”

Destin [Daniel Cretton] was super instrumental in that, but it was just really great to constantly be calling up the studio and [producers] Amy [Pascal] and Rachel [O’Connor], who I love, and be like, ‘Well, Chris [Nolan] is doing it this way. This is how I think we should be doing it.’”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in cinemas now.
