The brand-new “adventure-ready urban explorer ebike,” the Orbea Muga, is one of many new and updated models from the Spanish brand. Borrowing design elements from the brand’s existing and uniquely styled Diem and Kemen models, the new Muga kicks things up a notch with a full suspension design and components intended to take you from the city streets to the countryside and back again. A cross between an urban and mountain bike design, the Muga is a bit of a hybrid or “SUV-style” ebike that looks ready to take riders just about anywhere they want to go.

The Muga officially launched at Eurobike and immediately took home a coveted Eurobike Award. In the jury’s statement, they said, “The Muga wants to be both: Your everyday ride and an off-road performer. A successful crossover, characterized by its safe and confidence-inspiring ride quality and everyday practicality. The jury finds it to be visually striking overall with high attention to detail.” That’s very high praise for this brand-new model from Orbea. Let’s dive into the details to see what it’s all about.

Orbea Muga Design

The new Muga has an alloy frame that borrows its angular lines and aesthetics from the rigid-framed Diem city bike and expands on the off-road capability of the adventure-ready Kemen ADV hardtail model. While it may not look like a full suspension design at first glance, the Muga’s semi-hidden and protected rear shock delivers 115 mm of rear wheel travel. That’s paired with a much more obvious 120 mm suspension fork at the front of the bike.

Like many modern mountain bikes, the Muga comes with mixed wheel sizes, with a 27.5” rear wheel and a 29” front wheel, aiming to provide stability and control while remaining easily maneuverable. All Muga builds also come with dropper seatposts so riders can adjust their saddle height on-the-fly as needed.

The Muga frame also houses the popular, high-performance Bosch Performance Line CX mid-drive motor. The battery is purposely built into the downtube using what Orbea refers to as its “Secure Battery System”, protecting it from knocks and theft. Depending on the build, the Muga comes with either a lighter 600 Wh battery or a longer-range 750 Wh battery, both of which fit into the same space within the frame.

The front triangle includes two mounting points for water bottles, locks, or other accessories. An integrated rear rack has a claimed weight capacity of 30 kg and is compatible with child seats, panniers, and MIK HD, MIK Side, and Ortlieb QL3.1 system accessories. Up front, mount points on the head tube can fit the optional front rack if you choose. It also comes with full-coverage trail-ready mudguards for all-weather versatility, an integrated heavy-duty kickstand, and an integrated SP Connect smartphone mount.

Orbea Muga Geometry

The Muga comes in four frame sizes, S-XL, and is claimed to fit riders between 5’2” and 6’9” (153 – 206 cm). Overall, the “Active Geometry” more closely resembles that of a mountain bike than a city bike. With a 66.5-degree head tube angle, 76-degree seat tube angle, and a 495 mm reach (size large), it looks ready to confidently tackle dirt roads and singletrack trails. Additionally, the dropper post allows riders to lower the saddle for better handling on descents or to simply make it easier to get on and off the bike.

At the same time, it’s clear that comfort was a major consideration in its design. Orbea’s patented “Adjustable Cockpit” offers four distinct handlebar positions, making it possible to dial in both the handlebar’s height and reach to suit your preferences. With this system, riders can adapt the cockpit for a more upright and relaxed riding position, or a slightly lower and more performance-oriented stance.

Orbea Muga Motor and Battery

The Muga comes with the Bosch Performance Line CX mid-drive motor system. This powerful and compact motor delivers up to 85 Nm of torque and up to 600 watts of peak power. With a free over-air update, it can now be upgraded to 100 Nm of torque and 750 W of peak power, making it one of the most powerful mid-drive systems on the market. The Bosch CX motor is highly regarded for its smooth power delivery, refined feel, and tunability. It has four levels of pedal assistance, all of which can be fine tuned through the Bosch Flow App.

The Performance Line CX system includes a handlebar-mounted Bosch MiniRemote to shift through the various levels of pedal assist. It also includes the top tube integrated Bosch System Controller display to monitor battery levels and pedal assist mode. Curiously, we couldn’t find the Muga’s e-bike classification or top speed listed anywhere on the brand’s website or in the press materials, but it’s fair to assume that it will comply with regional regulations and standards.

Between the three complete Muga builds currently offered, riders have the option to choose either a longer-range 750 Wh battery (Muga 10 and 20) or a lighter-weight 600 Wh battery (Muga 30). Along with those options, riders can add the optional Bosch PowerMore 250 Wh Range Extender ($549) when purchasing to bump the battery capacity up to 1,000 Wh or 850 Wh, respectively.

Integrated Safety Features

Being seen on your bike is one of the best ways to enhance your safety on the road, and thankfully, Orbea didn’t skimp on integrated lighting. According to Orbea, “A full intelligent lighting system is standard, activating automatically to illuminate the path and make one visible from all sides.” This includes the handlebar-integrated Supernova Starstream headlight and a fender-mounted rear light with brake-light functionality. Also included is a stem/headtube integrated wraparound front light that provides additional front and side visibility.

For bike security, the Muga has a hidden Bluetooth tracker mount location that is compatible with trackers like AirTag, Tile Mate, and the Bosch Connect Module. Additionally, the Bosch Flow app includes a digital lock, so you can lock the motor when you’re out of range.

Orbea Muga Models

The new Muga comes in three complete builds, all of which are built around the same frame and Bosch Performance Line CX system, but come with varying drivetrain configurations and battery sizes. While some components vary between the different models, the Fox Float Performance rear shock, OC Mountain Control dropper post (drop length varies by frame size), and the “Adjustable Cockpit” setup are shared by all three builds. Likewise, all Mugas come with the same alloy wheels, versatile Schwalbe Johnny Watts tires, and Selle Royal Vivo Ergo saddle.

The Muga comes in three color options: Metallic Rust – Diamond Black, Ivory White – Black, and Blue Stone – Diamond Black. When purchasing, buyers also have the option to add the Range Extender (549 €), the Front Carrier (98 €), or a Quadlock phone mount (17 €).

The Eurobike award-winning Muga 10 is the top-of-the-line model in the three bike range. It comes with the 750 Wh battery, a Fox 34 Float AWL Sport suspension fork, and the upgraded “Pro” headlight as standard. It comes with the Enviolo Automatiq hub for fully automatic shifting, a low-maintenance Gates CDX Belt, and powerful Shimano MT520 hydraulic disc brakes.

Orbea Muga 20: 5,999 €

The Muga 20 steps down a price tier but keeps the same suspension fork and 750 Wh battery as its more expensive sibling. The primary difference is the drivetrain configuration, which consists of a traditional chain paired with the electric Shimano Cues Di2 derailleur and associated components.

Orbea Muga 30: 4,999 €

The entry point to the Muga lineup is the Muga 30. This build comes with the lighter-weight and slightly shorter-range 600 Wh battery. This model comes with an SR Suntour Mobie34 fork and Shimano MT420 hydraulic disc brakes. Instead of electric Cues shifting, the 30 build comes with the cable-actuated 11-speed setup.
