The Speck Gear Y-Rack is a new offering from a small maker out of Switzerland. Featuring an adjustable strut design and seemingly universal mounting features, this minimal rack looks like it could be a solid addition to the growing list of rear racks suited for a wide variety of off-road oriented bikes.
With a primary body made of stainless steel and struts made of aluminum, the Speck Gear Y-Rack measures 12 centimeters (4.7 inches) wide by 31 centimeters (12.2 inches) long and has an adjustable height of 34 to 37 centimeters (13.4 to 14.6 inches). It weighs 425 grams (15 ounces), and its stated load capacity sits at a burly 30 pounds (14 kilograms). According Speck, the max tire the Y-Rack can fit is a 29 x 3.0″ without a fender, but fitting one to the rack is possible. The Y-rack is also said to be compatible with any bike that has spacing from 150 to 180mm. For bikes that don’t feature a threaded eyelet for attachment, a Tubus clamp adapter can be used.
Though the racks can obviously be used in any manner that works for the user, they’re designed around the use of Speck’s Mini Pannier. With a small loop near the bottom of the rack, the Mini Pannier’s attachment system easily clamps on to the side of the rack. It’s an interesting design that integrates a unique use of their own product, but the height adjustment at the bottom of the rack looks a tad worrying. It will be interesting to see how these hold up to the abuse of a rough-and-tumble tour.
The Speck Gear Y-Rack retails at 196 CHF or roughly $250 USD and includes all the necessary mounting hardware. Orders are open, but these racks aren’t shipping as of yet; they should start to be sent out within the month.
